UN: High prices of properties violate human rights to housing
The financial inaccessibility of housing is one of the main reasons for the violation of human right to adequate housing, the problem is exacerbated because of the global financial crisis, said on Thursday the UN Special Rapporteur on housing issues Rocket Rolnik quoted by RIA Novosti.
Universal Declaration of Human Rights in particular states that every person is entitled to a standard of living, including food, clothing, shelter, medical care and necessary social care that is needed to maintain his and his family health and welfare.
In the words of Rolnik problems with payment of loans and mortgage loans, put families with low incomes in dangerous conditions and even turn them into homeless.
Faith that the property market will provide adequate housing for all disappeared. Today’s crisis is a fresh reminder of this reality, “emphasized Rolnik.
“The home is not a commodity - four walls and roof, a place to live in conditions of safety, peace and dignity and the right of every person,” says Rolnik.
Only in the U.S. by the crisis have affected millions of property owners and tenants, but now the trend encompasses many other countries, said the representative of the UN, as expressed concern that people in other countries will also need to move from their homes because of inability to paid credit or maybe to pay rent.
To increase the number of homeless people in both developed and developing countries, Rolnik called on UN Member States to adopt urgent measures to improve the situation of people left without a roof.
In particular it called on governments to devise a more equitable and socially oriented system for obtaining housing, including subsidies for people with low incomes.
“The exclusive focus on the possession of the house as the only option for providing access to housing is also part of the problem” said the Rolnik. She crisis will force people to devise a better system that offers more options for providing housing.
“Possession of property is the preferred option for many. Ensuring adequate housing for all public order, which requires various commitments - from tax advantages in the purchase of the house to better legal protection of tenants, direct subsidies for the poor. Markets, even when properly regulated, can not provide adequate housing for all,” said Rolnik quoted by the press center of the United Nations.
